Spyros Z: First of all I want to congratulate you for your latest releases and want to point out that I am a big fan of yours for many years now.
DF: Thank you.
Spyros Z: Decoded Feedback sound was always unique and special but while listening to Shockwave album I noticed that the rhythm and the keyboards are much more powerful than previous releases. To my opinion those were the only 2 elements that could get improved since everything else was jsut perfect. DO you intend to keep it that way or was it just an experimentation?
DF: On Shockwave we decided to really concentrate on making the Rhythms more powerful and intense. We have received many emails noticing this difference. And we definitely plan to continue. We also worked on intensifying the basses and sequences, and creating more dramatic strings. It's great to see that you noticed. We had so much fun working on Shockwave. We didn't want to rush that release. It took 2 years to produce. Spyros Z: SHockwave is a much more industrial album than your previous releases, is this maybe a sign of what DF are planning to do? Turning more into industrial than electronic?
DF: We wanted to get back to basic industrial and noise. We were tired of hearing syntpop/futurepop. We needed to bring back the power. We still want to keep very electronic elements in our music. We listen to a wide variety of electronic music, so whatever we hear will influence the creation of our music.
Spyros Z: What is shockwave talking about? What are the concepts or ideas you like most to work with lyrically speaking when producing an album?
DF: There was a running theme throughout Shockwave. The title was created by our reaction to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11/ 2001. It was a day that shook the world and changed us forever. We know of 4 people who died in the twin towers. We live in Toronto , which is so close to NY, so we felt the fear and sadness. It was overwhelming. The lyrics talk about the human condition, the earth around us, relationships and of course politics, i.e. Democracy.
Spyros Z: I noticed a lot of sample waves while listening to your songs. Are you fan of cinema and why most bands feel the need to use samples in most of their songs? DF: At one point we thought to stop using film samples, but we love them so much. They add a richness to the song. A texture. A depth. I think industrial music is like theme music for life. It's the music score of our lives. And that is why it relates to movies so well. We are writing film scores to films that have never been made.
Spyros Z: How do you criticize that most EBM bands decide to walk more darkwave-industrial paths than they used to in the past. Does this have to do with a commercial turn in music?
DF: We don't really find darkwave-industrial commercial. We find Synthpop/Futurepop more commercial. It's always good to experiment with your style as long as it's a natural progression of who you are. Some bands might try to make synthpop in order to be more popular. But you can usually tell the bands that have always made synthpop and those who just make it to get famous. One of the synthpop bands we respect most is And One. They have always made synthpop and have a great style. They are genuine. A long time ago we thought about changing our style to be more commercial, but it just wasn't in us. Instead we got harder :)
Spyros Z: Can you describe us the perfect electronic concert?
DF: Wow, that is a difficult question. Definitely a good sound system, sound tech, light tech and a great audience. These are vital to a good show. As for size of the concert, we love playing big festivals, but we also love playing small intimate places. One of the best concerts we ever played was recently in Mexico City . Fantastic sound system, sound tech and light tech. And incredible audience. They were the most passionate people we have ever met. It was a real party. Everyone had a great time and we talked with all the fan afterwards. It was a perfect concert. Spyros Z: What should we expect from DF in the near future? Maybe a new release?
DF: We are 80% finished the production of our new CD. We don't have a title for it yet, but soon will. It is a natural step up from Shockwave. There are some elements of Shockwave in it, but there are also some cool surprises that you will just have to wait and hear. The new CD will be released in late spring. If you want to hear a song from the new album, check out "Supernova" on Machineries Of Joy Vol 3 compilation. It's available through Out of Line records. We are also working on a DVD release with 3 video artists. Not sure of the release date yet, but it might come out later this year. There is a lot involved with producing a DVD. Our DVD will include all our videos, new videos, live footage, an exclusive song to only be released on the DVD, and much more. We can give more details later.
Spyros Z: Where do you want to see the band in few years down the line??
DF: Our dream is to create soundtracks for film. But for now, we just Want to tour as much as possible. We hope to finally play in Greece someday soon. That would be so cool.
Spyros Z: I would like to thank you very much for the Interview and to definitely see you soon!!
DF: Our pleasure. Thank you!
